Sure, baby animals are cute. But have you ever seen what they look like before they’re born?
Have you ever wondered how animals develop the traits they need to survive? Or how they grow from a single cell at conception to complex, unique creatures? The answer is complicated―there are so many ways to grow!
Author Carrie A. Pearson introduces middle-grade readers to a variety of animals and shows how they develop some of their defining features. See how bats form wings so they can take flight. And how mice make whiskers to sense their surroundings. Watch Them Grow explores genetics, gestation, and early development through twelve different animal examples. Discover animal beginnings and watch them grow everything they need to survive.

A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection!
School Library Journal review: “Gr 5-8–Former educator Pearson has written an intriguing elementary science book, explaining when and why animals develop the way they do and showing different animals in different phases prior to birth. While pictures of creatures from bats to snakes to elephants in utero or egg may be deemed “gross” by some younger readers, others will flock to this title for precisely that same reason; they can read about “gross” things without getting in trouble, because it’s scientific! Students will learn many facts related to fetuses in nature, such as why a mouse grows its whiskers before it is born or how great white sharks give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. Great explanations of cell division, DNA, and chromosomes in the opening chapter lay groundwork for the five remaining chapters. Diagrams are clear and appropriate for younger readers. Backmatter includes a glossary, a short mention of how scientific names are determined, and an invitation to give “baby gifts” to animals, like protecting habitats or minimizing pesticide use. A short explanation of how mating occurs is only mentioned in conjunction with an explanation of genetics. The use of the color green adds to the overall nature-loving aspect of this book, and though it is text-heavy, the text is all one font, making it easy to read.
VERDICT A great introduction to the science of reproduction in a way that makes animal babies the star of the show.”
